Sunglasses for Children

Why are sunglasses for children is especially important?
Did you know?
- Three quarters (76 percent) of parents don’t protect their children’s eyes in the sun
- Up to 80 percent of a person’s exposure to harmful ultraviolet (UV) light happens before the age of 18!
- Of those who do buy sunglasses for their children, almost half (46 percent) put cost ahead of protection
Only 25 percent of parents choose sunglasses from a reputable brand or supplier and nearly 50% opt for price over protection.
Sunlight can damage the retina and lens of the eye, increasing the risk of developing certain conditions such as cataracts and possibly age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in later life.
It’s therefore especially important that parents make sure that children wear sunglasses so that any long-term damage is minimised.
What you can do?
- Buy good quality, dark sunglasses.
- Light coloured eyes are especially vulnerable. Children with light coloured eyes are most at risk from sun damage so take even more care to ensure glasses are worn in the sun.
