Cataracts
Symptoms, Diagnosis & Treatment.

If you experience cloudy or blurry vision, cataracts may be to blame. Early cataract detection and treatment help improve your vision and can prevent significant impairment.  Dr. Gottlieb Optometry and our experienced optometrists test for and diagnose cataracts, offer vision correction, and facilitate co-management with ophthalmologists if you require cataract surgery. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Gottlieb Optometry over the phone or online at the first sign of blurry vision issues.

What are cataracts?

A cataract is a disease associated with clouding of the lens of your eye, and commonly occurs with older age. Cataracts can diminish your vision and worsen over time if left untreated. They might occur in one or both of your eyes. By age 80, over 50% of people in the United States have experienced cataracts at some point during their life.

What are the symptoms of cataracts?

The following signs and symptoms may indicate you have cataracts:

  • Colors that appear to fade
  • Blurry vision
  • Cloudy vision
  • Poor night vision
  • Double vision
  • Glare with lights
  • Light sensitivity
  • Seeing halos around lights
  • Frequent vision prescription changes

Cataracts often develop slowly over time. Treatment helps restore your vision and prevent further vision impairment.

What are the risk factors for cataracts?

While anybody can develop a cataract, the following risk factors can contribute to its development:

  • Older age
  • Excessive sunlight exposure
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Previous eye injuries or surgery
  • Eye inflammation
  • Excessive alcohol use
  • Prolonged use of corticosteroid medicines

There’s no surefire way to prevent cataracts, but taking some precautions can lower your risk of developing complications.

Examples include attending routine vision screenings and exams, properly managing chronic diseases, not smoking, limiting alcohol use, eating a healthy diet, and protecting your eyes from the sun.

How are cataracts diagnosed?

To diagnose cataracts, the experienced vision team at Dr. Gottlieb Optometry uses advanced imaging and testing equipment, such as Marco OPD3, to accurately diagnose and determine the severity of cataracts. Your optometrist completes a comprehensive eye exam and vision tests to establish which cataract treatment is right for you.

What is the treatment for cataracts?

Your personalized cataract treatment plan is based on the severity of your condition and the type of vision impairment you experience. Your provider at Dr. Gottlieb Optometry corrects vision problems with glasses, contacts, anti-glare sunglasses, or magnifying lenses.

Dr. Gottlieb Optometry has long-term relationships with numerous surgery centers in the area and facilitates co-management if you require cataract surgery.

Don’t let cloudy vision negatively affect your quality of life, or let untreated cataracts progress to severe vision problems. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Gottlieb Optometry over the phone or online at the first sign of vision changes.
