Contact lenses can virtually correct almost any optical problems.Contact lenses can virtually correct almost any optical problems. In some cases it can be the only solution.

Basically, there are hard (gas permeable) and soft contacts. The majority of patients are fit with soft. Soft contacts can be divided into those types that correct farsightedness (Hyperopia), nearsightedness (Myopia), focusing up close problems (Presbyopia) or those that correct farsightedness and astigmatism or nearsightedness and astigmatism. Each of these five categories is available as a traditional (annual replacement) or as a disposable/ frequently replaced lens.

Our office prefers anything with a "#1" on it!

Disposable Contact Lenses

Currently, lenses can be replaced daily, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly and quarterly. Our office prefers anything with a "#1" on it: one day, one week, or one month.

1 Month Lenses

1 Month lenses are the typically the most cost effective way to get into the most advanced materials presently available and some offer the ability to sleep in the lenses up to 30 nights continuously without removal.

Gas Permeable Lenses

Gas Permeable lenses are also available as a daily or overnight wear lens. This is the type of lens used for orthokeratology, keratoconus and other corneal aberrations, or patients that have extreme astigmatism. Mainstream patients may also select this modality. The advantages of the firm lens are less overall cost, less "drying" problems and much crisper optics. The initial adaptation to the rigid lens is its biggest drawback.

Solutions are needed to store lenses overnight or to clean them. While the choice of solution can seem daunting, choosing a generic solution in lieu of a name brand alternative can often materialize into a much bigger problem than the savings ever will. See for more info.

The majority of patients are fit with soft contact lenses.
